Role prompting works because Claude interprets requests through the lens of the role: a compliance officer gives different advice than a startup founder, even on the same question.

You're asking Claude to review a legal contract. You add "You are a senior contracts attorney specializing in SaaS agreements." The quality and specificity of the analysis improves noticeably. Role prompting gives Claude a frame of reference — a persona, expertise level, and point of view — that shapes how it approaches your request.
